Are you sure? It seems strange to me that the king who is so impressed with his own ability to think and adapt would resolutely cut off one of the best avenues of both pleasure and power he can find. Would refuse to be moved by the person whose insights should be worth the most.

Let me guess. At his death you became 'less than yourself'. For you, who prides in being exactly who he is to the exclusion of all else, that was probably quite devastating. So while a friend is a priceless boon the trouble is that when you lose them that loss is also immeasurable. Friendships, well, any sort of relations really, are inherently fleeting things. And how can a king regularly plunged into despair possibly build his flawless empire? It's such a dangerous weakness.
